King George Square - Speakers Corner
Brisbane has always been a city worried by free speech. Their Domain was proclaimed in 1915 by Labour premier T J Ryan. In the 1920's that Domain was closed because of "Red Flag Rioting".. Eventually the city council proclaimed a corner of King George Square as a place for free speech in 1990. However it proved unsuitable for soapbox meetings. The question of where to speakin Brisbane is still unresolved. In 1999 Bribane Radicals did hold a meeting in the Mall for National Soapbox Day. The speakers were moved on after speaking for one hour. |
